How to Create and Set Up Your Own Plex Account

Welcome! If you're part of our family and want easy access to our shared media library (movies, TV shows, etc.)—especially when traveling to hotels, resorts, or visiting others—this guide will help you create your own Plex account. Having your own account lets you sign in independently on any device, without needing the main family login.

Why your own account? It makes watching on the go simple and secure. You'll get personalized recommendations, your own watch history, and access to our library from anywhere with internet.

Step 1: Create a Free Plex Account

  1. Go to the Plex website: plex.tv (or search for "Plex sign up" in your browser).
  2. Click the "Sign Up" button in the top right corner.
  3. Enter your email address (use one you check regularly, like Gmail or Outlook).
  4. Create a strong password (at least 8 characters, mix letters, numbers, and symbols—e.g., "FamilyMovieTime2026!").
  5. Click "Create an Account." Plex will send a verification email—check your inbox (or spam folder) and click the link to confirm.
  6. That's it! Your account is ready. Note: You don't need to buy Plex Pass—our family plan shares those benefits with you.
Tip: If you're on a phone or tablet, download the Plex app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) first, then sign up inside the app for easier setup.

Step 2: Accept the Invitation to Our Library

  1. Once your account is created, let me (the server owner) know your Plex username or email—I’ll send you an invitation to join our Plex Home and share the library.
  2. Check your email for the invite from Plex (subject like "You've been invited to a Plex Home").
  3. Click the link in the email and sign in to your new Plex account.
  4. Accept the invitation. Our media library will now appear in your Plex dashboard.
Tip: If you don't see the invite, log in to plex.tv, go to Settings > Users & Sharing, and check for pending invites.

Step 3: Sign In and Start Watching

  1. Download the Plex app on your device (phone, tablet, smart TV, Roku, Fire TV, etc.) if you haven't already.
  2. Open the app and click "Sign In."
  3. Enter your email and password (from Step 1).
  4. After signing in, our shared library should appear automatically (once I send you the invite). If not, go to app.plex.tv/desktop in a browser, sign in, and look for shared servers under "More from Plex" or in your library list.
  5. Browse and play! You can download shows/movies for offline viewing (great for travel).

For hotels or other TVs: Search for the Plex app on the smart TV, or use your phone to cast to it (via Chromecast/AirPlay if available).
